Coming Clean is a monthly series where we interview people about their relationship with clean beauty - the good, bad and ugly. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion, but if you only take away one thing, it should be this: there is no right or wrong way - there is only your way.
Susanna is a Clean Beauty + Lifestyle blogger. Check out our interview with her as part of CLOVE + HALLOW's monthly Coming Clean series.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO USING CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
I currently have three known tumors in my body with the latest one discovered last year in my stomach (about me here). The last tumor is usually identified as a precancerous stage and I began to realize that it's not just what I eat and put into my body, but also, the products we use as well. This health change overtime motivated me to research known ingredients in most commercial beauty products that are linked with cancer and other health issues. However, since the quantity of these ingredients is low enough to pass FDA restrictions (despite known correlation to health concerns), brands will continue to add them to their products.
WHICH BEAUTY PRODUCT DID YOU SWAP FIRST?
"i began giving up red meat, spicy foods, picked foods, fried foods, processed/smoked meats, etc."
WAS BEAUTY THE FIRST THING YOU SWITCHED WHEN MOVING TO A CLEANER LIFESTYLE?
No, my diet came first due to the above. Red meat has a high correlation with patients who developed stomach cancer in addition to various other types of foods/spices. I began giving up red meat, spicy foods, picked foods, fried foods, processed/smoked meats, etc. My intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt, chicken, and fish increased for my medical diet. I tried being vegetarian for 6 months but my body weight dropped below my average 100lbs (I'm 5'2) and was considered even more unhealthy so unfortunately, I was unable to continue being a vegetarian.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CLEAN BEAUTY STAPLES?
Osmia Organics - lip doctor, body oil, and hand creams
100% Pure - Better Naked Palette and their Pomegranate Anti-aging oil lipsticks
Clove + Hallow - Cheek Collection
Fitglow Beauty - a Calm Skincare line
Lily Lolo - Mascara
WHAT DOES YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE LOOK LIKE?
I rotate between brands based on my skin needs and weather/seasonality. Currently, in the winter, I opt for more hydrating lines such as the Fitglow Beauty Calm Cleansing Milk, Sea Toning mist, and followed by the Cloud Comfort Cream + Redness Rescue Cream. Some days I may opt for a facial oil such as the Clear Sailing Oil from Aphorism Skincare.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO SEE IN THE FUTURE FROM CLEAN BEAUTY?
Further diversity for all skin types and ethnicities. Sometimes, I love a brand but then become disappointed when they are only supporting light skin tones. I have a sensitive skin type with a fair skin tone (with cool undertones) but find myself struggling to find brands that diversify their range. Alima Pure does a great job, though, and I know Clove + Hallow is developing more products for 2019.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO TRANSITION TO CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
Begin your switch gradually and don't just invest into one brand. Try samples from various brands to see how they react to your skin before investing in full-sized products. Every skin type reacts differently so it's always a better idea to introduce new products slowly into the routine.
