Sun’s out, fun’s out—and if you’re not blessed with a naturally sunkissed complexion, your bronzer is, too. But there’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to this glow-getter. (Cue fears of Oompa Loompa skin!) This week, we’re tackling all the basics for using our natural mineral Bronzing Powder to fake fresh-from-the-beach vibes.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHADE
Picking out a bronzer that’s a few shades deeper than your natural skin tone is a given. But totally disregarding your undertone could mean the difference between a natural look and declaring to the world that you have bronzer on. See below for a quick cheat sheet:
FAIR OR LIGHT SKIN: Cool or neutral bronzer (like our Cabo shade)
OLIVE OR MEDIUM SKIN: Warm bronzer (such as our San Juan shade)
DARK SKIN: Neutral bronzer (we recommend our Bora Bora shade)
PREP YOUR CANVAS
The tell-tale signs of obvious bronzer: so-so blending and a rough skin texture that powder pigment clings to. The good news is both can be prevented by using the right products before you even pick up your bronzer! Always make sure to cleanse and use a good moisturizer (bonus points for exfoliating a few times a week to get rid of the dead skin cells that can catch onto powders). A smoothing primer can also work wonders. Finally, make sure your foundation has set for a few minutes before you start applying your bronzer, especially if it’s a liquid formula. If you move too quickly, the result can look a little muddy.
APPLY LIKE A PRO
Since bronzer easily doubles as contour, ask yourself what kind of look you’re going for: sunkissed or sculpted. If it’s the former, use a fluffy face brush to sweep the pigments on all the places the sun naturally hits, like your forehead, your cheekbones, your chin, and down the center of your nose. If you’re using bronzer to contour, reach for a smaller, more densely packed complexion brush and apply it in the shape of a 3 on either side of your face: from the hairline to the hollows of the cheeks, then onto the jawline. Whichever look you decide on, don’t forget to blend like crazy to achieve the most natural look.
